KNX is an open standard for building automation. Instead of a separate controller for every trade, the devices in the building share one bus and speak the same language, so a switch, a thermostat, a blind actuator and a dimmer are all addressable parts of the same installation.

There is no single brain that everything depends on. Intelligence is distributed across the devices, which is why a KNX installation keeps working when one part of it is replaced, and why it can be extended years after the building was finished.

A house is not built by one discipline. Electrical, heating, ventilation, shading and security are designed and installed separately, and in most buildings they stay separate for the rest of their life.

KNX is what makes them one system. The blind actuator knows the room is empty because the presence sensor said so. The heating knows the window is open because the contact reported it. Coordination is the product, not the individual devices.

The house above starts as a normal afternoon. Move a slider and one address changes. Press Leaving Home and seven of them change in sequence, across lighting, shading, heating, ventilation, leak monitoring, alarm and door locks.

The visualisation shows the four rooms with windows, the entrance, the technical room and the terrace. Lights brighten and dim in place, blind slats travel over the windows, and the room panels report measured temperature next to the target you asked for. Everything shown there is also available as a labelled control beside it.

Nothing here is a mockup of a single product. It is what any properly engineered KNX installation is expected to do.
